Another successful Argus Shield challenge was completed on Saturday 18th October2008, held again at the Takapuna Fire Station in conjunction with NZ Fire Service, Orica Chemnet and Trelleborg.
We had 9 teams competing for the coveted Argus Shield trophy from all around the North Island and 1 South Island team.
The Whakatu Processing South team was back to contest the title from 2007 along with another Whakatu processing team from the the North Island, Affco Horotiu, Affco Moerewa, Affco Rangiuru, Affco Imlay, Auckland Meats Processors and 2 Ingham teams from Morrinsville.
The day starts with a nice breakfast and then the competition starts in ernest. Teams are tested on their preparation & maintenance of their rescue gear, dressing for the rescue, search & rescue technique, safest team, safety test, disrobing, BA testing, First Aid & Leadership & Incident control. All these areas are scored by the experts within the NZ Fire Service and all scores are tallied up to count towards the best team winning the Argus Shield.
Another part of the day is the Hose Run event which test the skills of teams in setting and operating the Fire Hoses - this is a fun part of the day but very keenly contested by all teams who want that trophy at the end of the day as well.
The day is wrapped up with a debrief from the NZ Fire Service, afternoon tea and prizegiving and the winner for 2008 was a new comer to the podium - Affco Moerewa - who showed amazing skills and also took out the Team Leader, Gas Rescue & Most Improved award, so alot of silverware went North much to the delight of the squad members from Moerewa.
But congratulations go out to all teams who turned up on the day to test their skills against other squads and participated in an event which is beneficial for all rescue teams to ensure their work environment is well protected in hazardous situations.
